About Barnet

Barnet is the second largest borough in London and one of the most vibrant and successful in the capital. Home to around 335,000 people, we are a four-star authority committed to providing residents with the best public services.

Ours is a diverse population, with around 30%of the people living in Barnet from black and minority ethnic groups. That figure rises to 41% among under-20s, with over 100 languages spoken in our schools. So the future of our borough is rich in diversity – and we’re working hard to ensure a future as rich in promise.

Children and young people make up almost a quarter of Barnet’s total population. In all almost 84,000 young people aged 0-19 live here, around 46,000 of whom attend Barnet’s maintained schools.

Our high standards mean that, as a rule, these children do well at school, enjoy good health, benefit from low crime rates and have access to high-quality open spaces. But despite our relative prosperity, there are also significant pockets of deprivation. And we are equally focused on improving outcomes for children and young people in these areas.

Crucially, we recognise that no single organisation can succeed in this field alone. That’s why we take a multi-agency approach, working in partnership with health services, the police, the probation service, Barnet College and Middlesex University, as well as voluntary and private sector providers to deliver our strategy.
