We employ a large workforce of qualified healthcare professionals to ensure Barnet's excellent record on health among children and young people keeps improving. Many of these experts work with adults as well as children, but all share a commitment to making a difference to young people's lives through health and welfare.
High-quality health services are backed by healthy school meals, extensive health education, and easy access to sports and leisure activities.
Dental Nurses
Dental nurses provide a reassuring presence for our young patients as well as important technical and organisational assistance to dental practices. For further information on starting a career as a dental nurse, visit the British Association of Dental Nurses website: www.badn.org.uk
Dental Therapists
From scaling and polishing teeth to carrying our routine fillings and taking dental x-rays, dental therapists carry out a wide range of treatments under the supervision of a dentist. For information on the required training, visit the British Association of Dental Therapists website: www.badt.org.uk
Healthcare or Therapy Assistants
Working closely with health visitors, occupational therapists or speech and language therapists, our assistants help to deliver care packages in different settings including children's centres, nurseries, schools and homes. Entry qualifications depend on the nature of the job.
Health Visitors
Taking a family-centred approach to public health issues, Barnet's health visitors work in community settings to address health inequalities and promote good health. Most are trained nurses who have taken a further specialist qualification.
Nursery Nurses
Working with children and their families in various childcare and community settings across Barnet, nursery nurses promote good health and advise on child development. They are usually qualified to NVQ Level 3 or equivalent.
Occupational Therapists
From helping a disabled child master life-skills such as writing and dressing to adapting their home to meet their specific needs, our qualified occupational therapists work as integral members of hospital and community teams, as well as in social services.
Physiotherapists
Working as vital members of multidisciplinary teams, qualified physiotherapists evaluate the physical health of patients and help them achieve their maximum level of physical function through therapy and health education.
School Nurses
Providing healthcare individual support and advice to 5-18 years olds and their families from within a school setting, school nurses also promote public health services such as immunisation. Most are trained nurses holding a further specialist qualification.
Speech and Language Therapists
Learning difficulties and physical disabilities can both affect a child's ability to master language and communication. Speech and language therapists (SLTs) work alongside parents, carers, teachers, paediatricians and other professionals to help children achieve their full potential.
