Fyi Early Years Careers

The Children's Information Service has now changed its name to FYi.

We have re-branded to reflect the broader service we now provide for families, children and young people aged 0 - 20 years in Barnet.

This includes:
• lists and details of registered childcare in Barnet
• drop-in information sessions across the borough
• information on parental support and courses
• information about financial help available to help pay for childcare
• guidance on careers in childcare - childcare qualifications and careers
• advice on starting and running a childcare business.
• FYi - Frequently Asked Questions

High-quality childcare, nursery services and pre-school education give Barnet's youngsters the best start in life by building their skills and confidence from an early age.

Barnet is boosting services for the under fives with:

  • more nursery places,
  • priority places for three year olds from less well-off areas,
  • closer links with primary schools,
  • new childminder networks,
  • more teaching of reading and counting skills for youngsters in reception classes.

Your own experience of parenting or family childcare can be an excellent basis for working with children. Many Early Years workers begin their careers as volunteers before progressing to paid positions and relevant qualifications. All, however, must pass a Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) check.

More information is available from the Families and Young People's Information Service on 0800 389 8312 or by downloading our brochure Careers working with children, young people and families. To find out about the vacancies we have please visit www.barnet.gov.uk/fyi-jobs

Registered Childminders

Working from their own homes, childminders provide care and learning opportunities for other people's children. They are assessed and registered by the government's Office for Standards in Education (OFSTED).

Nurseries and Pre-schools

Working with children from babyhood until they start school, nurseries and pre-schools plan and organise activities for children that are educational and fun. Creating a caring and stimulating environment is key.

Playworkers

Adventure playgrounds, community and school-based play schemes, holiday schemes breakfast clubs and after-school clubs are just some of the settings where we support and enrich children's play experiences.
