Reasons to Join Our Workforce

With a total of 9,300 staff, Barnet Council is the largest employer in the borough. And we also aim to be one of the most progressive. Not only do we look to deliver the best public services to the communities we serve, but we’re also committed to offering great rewards and prospects to our people.

Wherever you join us in the Children’s Service, you can expect a clearly- defined career path, supported by comprehensive training and professional development. We have also introduced initiatives that help people to specialise in their field of choice or diversify their experience. Our newly-introduced job shadowing programme, which encourages greater collaboration between and across the whole children’s workforce is a prime example.

There are a number of other things that make working here so rewarding. On top of competitive rates of pay, we offer a range of discounted services within the borough, especially leisure facilities. We also champion a strong work/life balance, with policies including flexible working hours, increased annual leave and child-friendly working arrangements.

In Barnet developing the children and young people’s workforce is a key part of improving the life chances for all children, young people and families. We are committed to developing our workforce because we believe that children and young people are more likely to achieve improved outcomes when the people working with them are highly skilled, appropriately trained, well qualified and collaborate effectively to deliver quality services.

Barnet's Children and Young People’s Workforce Strategy (CWS) sets out our partnership approach for developing a world-class children’s workforce to deliver our ambition for better outcomes for children and young people as set out in our Children and Young People Plan. The CWS focuses on partnership workforce development initiatives across Barnet’s children and young people’s workforce - including multi-agency training programmes, joint events and initiatives such as our shadowing programme– all aimed at embedding integrated working and fostering good working relationships.

Service users, including children and young people, are regularly engaged in workforce development to ensure that any skills gaps are addressed as part of our approach to quality service delivery.

Our workforce development initiatives are free and open to everyone working with children and young people in Barnet. We have provided some of our key documents on this site so have a look around.
